This global connectivity helps South Africa, and Johannesburg in particular, to be a node in networks of global science.
As one scientist told me in an interview: .
"We can have collaboration between Europe and Africa. We don't have much time difference, so if we need to achieve deadlines on projects, we can coordinate very easily with people in Europe. And I think funding, we are trying to get funding for projects from Europe. So providing updates is much easier. I don't have to wait to come in tomorrow to get a response from the US. Or come in at 5 o'clock to check the response before the guys stop working."
